Departure from Denmark

The Danish captain Eskild Nieuwenhuis Møller and German General Kanstein at the farewell parade at the Engineer Barracks in July 1941. Several senior Danish officers participated in the ceremony, dressed in Danish Army dress uniforms. E. N. Møller wears the Danish Royal House’s Order of the Dannebrog Knight’s Cross. Such displays of Danish military personnel’s emblems and uniforms had significant symbolic and psychological importance for the average Dane in assessing what was happening and in the decision to enlist. In addition, seven Danish officers who entered German service wore the Danish Knight’s Cross.
