Grafenwöhr military training ground

March 24, 1943 – July 1, 1943

After a cold front, the Free Corps was pulled away on 24.3.1943 and assembled in Lysszowo and Medkowo to depart in a troop train to Southern Germany – Grafenwöhr.
On 6.4.1943, the 11th Pz. Gren. Division “Nordland” was officially established and the Danes were to form the core of the 24th regiment. In the following time, the Danes were thrown into a political fight where the Danish unit was dissolved and everyone was released from their contract with weapons SS. The leadership assumed that it was a formality that the Danes would continue in the new unit, but they were wrong. The vast majority of the Danes wanted to resign and return home to Denmark.
With political manipulation and pressure, among other things by sending envoy and minister Mohr to the camp, the Danes were made to remain in service. However, a group of steadfast volunteers persisted, and after some tug-of-war, were released, left the military, and returned home.
