On February 20, 1938, I was in Odense for a large meeting, where all the participants from Southern Jutland and Zealand were reported for wearing uniforms. I was wearing black boots, green riding breeches, a grey lumber jacket, and no headwear, which earned me 5 days “in the shade.”
On June 12 and 13, there was a national rally in Slagelse, which went very well.
On June 23, 1938, I traveled with the schoolteacher to Copenhagen District’s Midsummer Eve celebration at Sjælsø in North Zealand.
1939
From January 2 to 7, 1939, I paid for my “offense” with five days in Køge jail, where I read Hitler’s Mein Kampf and otherwise gathered strength for new meetings.
On January 8, the first issue of Fædrelandet was published, though it was not particularly impressive.
On January 9, I traveled with Elm to Taastrup, where there were demonstration marches and a meeting.
In the summer of 1938, we established our own SA unit in S.
On October 17, 1938, we attended a meeting in Nykøbing F.
In March 1939, the election campaign began, and I attended 24 meetings during that month, despite being confined to bed for eight days. The meetings I attended were held in Herfølge, Lidemark, Skensved, Dalby, Haslev, Vinbyholt, Sædder, Himlingeøje, Fakse, Køge, Tårnby, Bjæverskov, Rønnede, Lejre, Slagelse, Østervang, Kongsted, Hovrup, Roskilde, and concluded at Odd-Fellow Palæet.
Election Day, April 3, 1939. Three men elected to Parliament.
The most interesting election meeting we had was at Vindbyholdt Inn. Five of us arrived there in the schoolmaster’s car. We then went into the hall. A couple of fishermen were sitting inside, and when word spread around the village that the “Nazis” had arrived, many people streamed in, and by 8 PM both the hall and the balcony were full.
The glazier was chairman of the meeting, the schoolteacher gave the speech, Ernst supervised the hall, Jørgen the balcony, and I sold tickets. Despite the fact that all the red fishermen sensed an opportunity for “Nazi trouble,” the meeting went well.
After the meeting, there was a shared coffee gathering with discussion, where there were many good contributions and speeches, and it was nearly morning before we got home.
