First World War
The Danish participation in the First World War I have only worked with to a limited extent and will therefore leave the topic to others. However, I will here present smaller contributions and show a few items from that period.
The belt buckle with the characteristic motto “Gott mit uns” – “God with us” – as well as the steel helmet with “horns” are for many symbols of that period.
Likewise, the Iron Cross / “Eiserne Kreuz” is an unmistakable symbol of the German military. Here EK I (1st Class) in two versions, one with an engraved date, which was very commonly used during the First World War. There are also known versions with engraved names. EK I was worn on the left breast pocket. For civilian use, there was a ribbon bar.
One of the more unusual items is, for example, an original field dressing packet – considering the war (and the Second World War), it is remarkable that something as simple as a first aid packet has been preserved.
Likewise, a poster-sized embroidery is a striking item. These are known from naval personnel who were stationed in the Far East for extended periods. This one comes from a South Jutlander living in Sønderborg.
