The 38 Waffen-SS divisions
Here the insignia and divisional numbers of the 38 divisions of the Waffen-SS are shown, as well as the Spanish unit, which also became part of the Waffen-SS divisions.
The 39th division, which was formed but never reached full divisional strength, was the Spanish “Blaue Division” (Blue Division), consisting of Spanish volunteers.
Several of the 39 divisions were created as organisational divisions but never reached full strength, and in practice were often merged with other divisions or reinforced with regiments from other units to achieve divisional strength in combat formations.

a) = The divisions never reached full wartime strength.
b) = The division was disbanded in 1944 and divisional number 23 was transferred to the Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division “Nederland”.
c) = The division was transferred to General Vlasov’s Russian Liberation Army. Divisional number 29 was transferred to the Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Italian) in April 1945.
d) = The division was destroyed at the beginning of 1945 in the fighting around Budapest. Divisional number 33 was transferred to the Waffen Grenadier Division. Many of the above divisions (note a) never reached divisional strength. Some existed only at regimental or battalion size, while others were composed of depot units or ad hoc groups, which were then given “divisional” numbering.
