Poem

Below is a poem written by one of the Danish SS volunteers in a trench on the Eastern Front in 1942/43.

“WHEN THE PEOPLES OF EUROPE WERE IN DANGER”

When the peoples of Europe were in danger
And the battle cry came from Berlin.
From all countries a group reported themselves,
ready for battle.

An army, diverse and varied,
united in blazing courage.
An army of brothers,
who did not understand each other’s language.

But what do words really matter,
when all that matters is: go forward.
The crackle of machine guns—
that language we can all understand.

We fight against Russian hordes
who stand as if in league with the Devil.
We fight against Stalin’s guards.
Our struggle breaks the power of the beast.

And if you find death over there
in the struggle for the cause of renewal,
then we quietly bow our heads
and lower our swastika flag.

SS Sturmmann GREGER TECHOW
(Greger was formerly an NSU leader and a fervent National Socialist)

The Waffen-SS came to consist of approximately 1 million men in 38 divisions, made up of people from almost all European nationalities.
