But then came December 18, 1934. We were going to slaughter the Christmas pig, and I got up early that day and had taken care of the horses. While it was still dark, I was to place a crossbeam over a gate to hang the pig from, and during this work I lost my balance and fell into the gateway, breaking one of my legs.
A doctor and an ambulance were then called, and I was taken to the County Hospital on Nyelandsvej in Copenhagen, where I was given anesthesia, and the doctors set the leg. <\/p>\n
I lay there for half a year, and now had plenty of time to think about the problems of life. I read all the newspapers and, in particular, I now developed an interest in politics.
At that time there were large Communist meetings, among them at Gr\u00f8nttorvet, with disturbances and fights with the K.U., and the police also became involved. And in Germany, the young National Socialist Party was working to provide jobs for six million unemployed people, and had just occupied the Rhineland to secure living space for itself. <\/p>\n
On February 8, 1935, my parents came to pick me up. I had been allowed to go home to train with a plaster cast on my leg.
Fourteen days later, I had to return for a check-up, and the doctors then discovered that the leg had been set incorrectly, and I had to go to the “opera” once more to have it set properly.
As my sister was to be married on Good Friday, April 19, 1935, I was put back into a cast and then given Easter leave until May 2. <\/p>\n
On June 17, 1935, I was finally discharged and came home, after which I was to receive massage treatment for some time and had to stay at home limping around for quite a while.
In the winter of 1935\u201336, I passed my driving test, after which it was intended that I would drive professionally; but it only resulted in a small two-seater car, which I had for about half a year for my own enjoyment.
