On 14 February 1943 I was recommended for the Iron Cross, 2nd Class, and that same evening, while I was on guard duty, a hare came hopping out in no-man\u2019s-land about 200 meters away. Since there was nothing else to shoot at, I \u201ctook it down.\u201d <\/p>\n
On 21 February I was to be awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd Class, but that same day, in the evening while I was on guard duty, a Russian bullet struck me, penetrating through my ear and lodging in my head, so I collapsed and immediately lost consciousness.
A sled was then sent for. When my brother heard that someone from our group had been wounded, he went over to us. Only when the wounded man was placed on the sled did he realize it was me. <\/p>\n
I was sent to a field hospital, and on 24 April I reached Vienna, where I stayed for half a year in several hospitals. After I had been there about a month, two of my sisters-in-law came to visit me. They had learned through my wife that I was in a Wehrmacht hospital (they themselves were nurses at an SS hospital and had come to Vienna at the same time as I had).
From then on I spent a lot of time with them, and I was almost more often at the SS hospital, where several Danish soldiers were admitted, than at the hospital where I was staying myself. Metha and I went out several times to see the beautiful places in Vienna, including Baden, the Prater and the lovely Sch\u00f6nbrunn, St. Stephen\u2019s Cathedral and the Imperial Palace, which is world-famous for its beauty. <\/p>\n
On 28 August 1943 I was discharged and travelled to Graz, a beautiful journey across the mountains.<\/p>\n
On 12 September I was granted sick leave home, and it had been 11 months since I had last seen my family. Because my wife had been \u201cbought out\u201d for the second time, we purchased a property in V, with 2 t\u00f8nder of land, and moved in on 1 October. <\/p>\n
On 4 October I had to leave Denmark again.
